The best way to stay on top of your oral health is to create positive oral hygiene habits. How are habits formed? People often associate the word “habits” with a negative connotation, but oral hygiene habits are great, and they are formed by repetition of a good oral hygiene routine. We are happy to help you with your oral hygiene habits and would like to encourage you to learn more!

Brushing and Flossing

It’s no secret that brushing and flossing are the cornerstones of great oral hygiene routine. Why do we brush and floss? The fight we wage against cavities and other oral health maladies stems from bacterial build-up on your teeth. There are thousands of bacteria that live their lives within your mouth. These bacteria feed on the sugars and acids that pass through your mouth and build-up on the surfaces of your teeth and gums. These bacteria are called plaque. Brushing and flossing functions to break-up plaque deposits and wash them away. Brushing takes care of the bacteria on the outer surfaces of your teeth and flossing works to remove the plaque between each tooth.

You can use whatever toothpaste you like; we thoroughly recommend using toothpaste with fluoride as fluoride works to strengthen the enamel of your teeth.

Rinsing With Regularity

There are times when you can’t brush and floss where you can still do something good for the health of your mouth. Lunch is a great example. In a perfect world you would brush and floss after every meal, but no one carries a toothbrush with them to work (besides us). After lunch, or after a snack you can do your mouth a favor by simply rinsing with some water. Rinsing does a good job of washing away food particles that might otherwise sit in your teeth until you brush next.

Twice-Yearly Checkups

The missing link in many oral hygiene routines is coming in for a regular cleaning and examination by your dentist at least twice a year. By doing this, we can give your teeth a thorough cleaning and make sure that no oral health maladies are attacking your mouth. We will clean your teeth, making sure to hit all the hard-to-reach spots that you can’t get to and we will polish them so that it’s harder for plaque to get a grip on your teeth. Dr. Luisa Snyder will examine your mouth thoroughly for signs of cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and damage to your teeth.

Repetition is Key

Building a good habit will feel like a pain for the first few weeks, but it’s critical that you keep at it. Never miss a day in doing your routine. Eventually, you will hit your stride, and it will become second nature. Brushing and flossing will be easier to do, and it will feel like a normal part of your day.
