Digital X-Rays

Our dentist and hygienist looking at a digital x-ray at Fairmount Dental Center in Salem, ORDental exams are a crucial part of helping you maintain a healthy mouth and a beautiful smile. Routine exams allow us to check your mouth for early warning signs of different issues. Other types of exams may be performed when you come to us with specific symptoms. Part of your dental exams involves an inspection of the visible structures of your mouth. There are many parts of your mouth. However, that cannot be seen with the naked eye. At Fairmount Dental Center, we can help to spot many different issues in these hidden areas of your mouth, allowing you to get the treatment you need, with digital x-rays.

Do I Need X-Rays?

X-rays are a crucial component of your dental exams. While there are many areas of your mouth that can be seen with just a visual inspection of your mouth, there are many components that cannot be seen. This allows us to spot issues that we would otherwise miss. We can more accurately diagnose a wide array of different issues and provide you with an effective treatment plan. With x-rays, we can see
•  Decay and cavities between your teeth.
•  Root damage.
•  Fractures to your jaw.
•  Bone loss.
•  Tumors in your jawbone.
•  Impacted teeth.
•  Cysts and abscesses.

Digital X-Rays

For years, x-rays have relied on radiation for capturing images. Additionally, after taking your images, they would need to be developed in a dark room. Developing traditional x-rays takes time, which can eat into your appointment. There is less time to go over issues we find or discuss treatment options. Moreover, the use of radiation raises concerns for many patients, which can cause them to shy away from getting necessary images.

Today, we use digital x-rays to capture important images of the hidden components of your mouth. Instead of radiation, digital x-rays use electronic technology. An electronic sensor is placed in your mouth. We angle it and have you bite down so that we can capture the necessary image. The sensor is attached to a computer. We click a button on the computer and your image is captured. In just a matter of seconds, the image is displayed right on the computer monitor. There is no need to develop the images or even leave the room.

What Are the Benefits of Digital X-Rays?

There are numerous benefits associated with digital x-rays:
•  There is significantly less radiation exposure. In most cases, radiation is reduced up to 95%.
•  Taking images is quick, simple, and completely painless.
•  After taking your images, they are displayed almost immediately on the computer. We do not have to take time to develop them.
•  After taking your images, computer software can be used to manipulate the images. We can zoom in and enhance for greater clarity to spot the smallest details that might otherwise go unnoticed. This allows us to provide you with an accurate diagnosis of your specific issues and provide you with the best possible treatment plan.
•  Your whole appointment is spent with you. We can take the time to explain your diagnosis and help you understand your treatment options. We are also able to answer any questions you may have so that you can be confident in your treatment plans.

Digital x-rays allow us to see many different issues before symptoms even begin to show. With these images, we can make more accurate diagnoses, and provide you with the best possible treatment plans. For more information, call Fairmount Dental Center at (503) 362-8364 today.
